Wars and Weapons Will Not Save Us From COVID-19

Seven hundred and fifty billion dollars. That’s roughly how much the United States is spending annually on weapons and war. About $35 billion of that is for nuclear weapons, which, in a best-case scenario, sit in holes in the ground and never get used.

Violent Offenses Fact Sheet

Too often when Congress passes legislation, they exclude people with violent offenses. This does not work. These reforms leave out too many people, the cost of incarceration is too high, and it’s cruel given all the people we leave out of relief.

The Power of Faith in Bridging Divides

FCNL policy committee member Michael Snarr recently co-authored a book that profiles seven individuals living out their faith through service to others. Emily Wirzba, FCNL’s lead environmental lobbyist, was one of them.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201) will provide crucial assistance to individuals and communities affected by the coronavirus outbreak – particularly the most vulnerable members of our society. While this legislation does not include all of FCNL’s priorities, it is a vital step forward. Here are the main provisions of the bill:

For-Profit Corporations Have No Place in the Justice System

In its 2019 session, the California State Legislature banned the state from entering into contracts with for-profit prisons, including for immigrant detention. As a Quaker organization, FCNL applauds this initiative. Private business interests have no place in the justice system. For-profit corporations exacerbate the horrific effects of detention felt by millions of people and families.
