FCNL reached out to Quaker colleagues in Cuba to ask them their thoughts on the present tension between Cuba and the United States of America. Below is the statement they gave us, first in Spanish and then an English translation.
Esto es una especie de declaración: Reconocemos el sufrimiento real que atraviesa la vida cotidiana: la escasez, la incertidumbre, la separación familiar y el desgaste del alma. No hablamos desde la distancia, sino desde el acompañamiento, la oración y el caminar junto a quienes resisten con esperanza.
Creemos que toda acción, incluso en el ámbito legislativo, debe nacer de una pregunta esencial:
¿Esto alivia el sufrimiento humano o lo incrementa?
A la luz de esa pregunta, animamos a:
Enfoque humanitario urgente
Sugerencia:
- Abogar por facilitar el envío de ayuda humanitaria (alimentos, medicinas, insumos médicos, combustible) sin trabas innecesarias
- Facilitar canales legales y seguros de ayuda
Muchas personas fuera de Cuba desean ayudar, pero encuentran obstáculos
Sugerencia:
- Promover mecanismos más ágiles y accesibles para enviar ayuda desde EE.UU.
- Apoyar iniciativas que permitan compras directas y entregas seguras en la isla
- Revisar regulaciones que, terminan afectando al pueblo más que a las estructuras de poder
Escuchar a la sociedad civil y a las comunidades de fe
Las iglesias y comunidades de fe están sosteniendo a muchas personas en medio de la crisis.
Sugerencia:
- Reconocer y escuchar a actores locales, incluyendo comunidades religiosas
- Declaración de acompañamiento y discernimiento sobre Cuba
- Abogar con sensibilidad y sin polarización
El tema de Cuba suele estar cargado de tensiones políticas
Sugerencia:
- Promover un lenguaje que ponga al ser humano en el centro, no ideologías
- Evitar medidas que incrementen el sufrimiento cotidiano del pueblo
- Buscar caminos que fomenten la dignidad, la apertura y la vida
- Acompañamiento espiritual y ético
Como Amigos, creemos en la luz en cada persona
Sugerencia:
- Mantener una postura basada en la paz, la verdad y la justicia
- Recordar que toda acción política debe evaluarse por su impacto real en la vida de las personas
Como Amigos, afirmamos que hay una luz en cada persona y en cada pueblo. Confiamos en que esa luz también guía los procesos de justicia cuando se actúa con humildad, escucha y compasión.
Oramos para que toda decisión esté orientada no por intereses, sino por la vida; no por ideologías, sino por la dignidad; no por el poder, sino por el amor.

This is a type of statement: We acknowledge the real suffering that permeates daily life: scarcity, uncertainty, family separation, and the wear and tear on the soul. We do not speak from the distance, but from a place of companionship, prayer, and walking alongside those who resist with hope.
We believe that every action, including in the legislative sphere, must arise from an essential question:
Does this alleviate human suffering or increase it?
In light of that question, we encourage:
An urgent humanitarian focus
Suggestions:
- Advocate for facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid (food, medicine, medical supplies, fuel) without unnecessary barriers
- Facilitate legal and secure channels for aid
Many people outside Cuba want to help, but face obstacles
Suggestions:
- Promote more streamlined and accessible mechanisms for sending aid from the U.S.
- Support initiatives that allow for direct purchases and safe deliveries to the island
- Review regulations that end up affecting the people more than the structures of power
Listen to civil society and faith communities
Churches and faith communities are supporting many people in the midst of the crisis.
Suggestions:
- Recognize and listen to local stakeholders, including religious communities
- Statement of solidarity and discernment regarding Cuba
- Advocate with sensitivity and without polarization
The issue of Cuba is often fraught with political tensions
Suggestions:
- Promote language that puts human beings at the center, not ideologies
- Avoid measures that increase the daily suffering of the people
- Seek paths that foster dignity, openness, and life
- Spiritual and ethical accompaniment
As Friends, we believe in the light within every person.
Suggestions:
- Maintain a stance grounded in peace, truth, and justice
Remember that every political action must be evaluated based on its real impact on people’s lives
As Friends, we affirm that there is a light within every person and every community. We trust that this light also guides the pursuit of justice when we act with humility, a willingness to listen, and compassion.
We pray that every decision may be guided not by narrow interests, but by life; not by ideologies, but by dignity; not by power, but by love.
