Dismantling racism and militarism in our police system means changing the fundamentals of how we approach public safety.

On Sept. 22, the House passed the Invest to Protect Act of 2022, a bipartisan bill that allocates $60 million a year for five years to local police departments across the United States.

FCNL fully supports the executive order issued this week by President Joe Biden to advance effective, accountable policing and strengthen public safety.

Nine months after the murder of George Floyd, The House has once again passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 1280).

Included in the National Defense Authorization Act are provisions that would ban the transfer of some war equipment to local police.

After the killings of numerous black people at the hands of police in 2020, Americans nationwide have demanded meaningful change to our current policing laws. In response to the public calls for justice and transformation, Congress introduced two pieces of policing reform legislation: The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and the JUSTICE Act.

The list of people killed by police is tragically long. Fortunately, Congress has introduced meaningful legislation to address this serious loss of life. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (H.R. 7120), introduced by Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37), passed the House on June 25, 2020 by a bipartisan vote of 236-181. The Senate companion bill, S. 3912, was introduced by Sens. Cory Booker (NJ) and Kamala Harris (CA) and currently has 36 co-sponsors.

Jacob Blake. Another name in the long list of Black men and women shot by police. This time a father, security guard, and a sibling. He was shot multiple times while his children watched from the car. Just imagine being a small child and witnessing your father being gunned down by police. Thankfully, they did not take his life.
