Senate Rebuffs President’s “End-Run” on Saudi Arms Sales

Washington, DC - The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) hails today’s Senate vote to reject the $8 billion arms sale package to Saudi Arabia and other countries that the Trump administration sought to push through without congressional oversight and approval. By a vote of 53 to 45, the Senate disapproved the sale of bombs of the type that have been used in Saudi attacks against Yemeni civilians.

Long Delayed Disaster Relief Package Welcome Aid to Millions

Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) praised the Senate for completing its work on a disaster relief package that was months overdue. The central component of the bipartisan compromise includes $19.1 billion to help Americans citizens recover from natural disasters from 2017-2019. The most controversial aspect of the process – a late-breaking Administration request to include an unrelated $4.5 billion more in border enforcement funding – has been avoided. The House must now follow suit without any further delay.

AUMF Repeal A Step Forward for Peace

Washington, DC – Today, the House Appropriations Committee voted for an amendment from Representative Barbara Lee (CA) to repeal the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). Designed to take effect after eight months, the Congress would need to pass a new AUMF or the Administration would need to remove American military personnel from current wars during that timeframe.

Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) praised today’s House passage of the Climate Action Now Act (H.R.9). Passed 231-190, the legislation prevents any funding for removing the United States from the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. It also requires the administration to develop plans to meet its emissions reductions goals under the agreement. The bill passed with unanimous Democratic support and included Republican votes.

Senate Votes to End Illegal U.S. War in Yemen

Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) hailed today’s landmark Senate vote to end American involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen. The legislation (S.J. Res 7), passed 54-46, enforces the 1973 War Powers Act by ending American military participation in a war that has killed untold thousands and put millions of Yemenis on the brink of starvation.
