Advocacy Teams have historically worked on only one legislative campaign every year, which allows the program to be both strategic and effective as 135+ teams in 48 states all coordinate their efforts. However, as the program celebrates its 10th anniversary, and our network has grown in size, expertise, and capacity, we’ve seen an opportunity to expand our work.

Advocacy Teams now have the option to “flex” their advocacy on a second priority as they have time. In 2025, Advocacy Teams will urge Congress to protect the clean energy tax credits passed under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA, P.L. 117-169).

During the 119th Congress, the Republican majority plans to use a budget reconciliation procedure to extend tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy, impose cruel immigration policies, and overhaul healthcare. To cover these expenses, we’ve heard plans to cut spending elsewhere, with clean energy tax credits passed in IRA at the top of the list.

The impact of these tax credits has been extraordinary, helping drive economic growth while keeping the U.S. on track to cut emissions nearly in half by 2030.

The impact of these tax credits has been extraordinary, helping drive economic growth while keeping the U.S. on track to cut emissions nearly in half by 2030. Eliminating them would be a major blow to the progress we’ve seen on confronting the climate crisis—leading to $336 billion in lost investment, 97,000 fewer jobs, and a 10% rise in electricity bills at a time when tens of millions of Americans already struggle to afford energy costs. FCNL championed these investments in 2022, and now we must do all we can to preserve them.

Advocacy Teams will urge members of Congress to oppose the repeal of Inflation Reduction Act investments in affordable clean energy which are critical for job creation, economic development, and lowering costs for families. The good news: these tax credits have historically enjoyed bipartisan support, and 21 House Republicans recently voiced opposition to eliminating them.

Protecting the historically bipartisan clean energy tax credits passed under the IRA is a pragmatic solution to continue to bring down prices for everyday Americans, confront the climate crisis, and build a more resilient country for all. By highlighting the positive benefits of these vital investments in jobs and a sustainable future, we can preserve these historic tax credits. Learn more about the issue in our in-depth backgrounder
