Spring Lobby Weekend 2020 participants

Hundreds of young advocates from all around the U.S. brought a clear and compelling message to Congress: now is the time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate the damage already being done by climate change, and protect vulnerable communities by passing carbon pricing legislation.

For the first time ever, we gathered online for Spring Lobby Weekend, March 29-31, 2020. We spent Sunday and Monday hearing from powerful speakers about the climate emergency, discussing the stories we bring, practicing how to lobby, and learning from experts about our policy ask: co-sponsoring the Climate Action Rebate Act (S. 2284/H.R. 4051).

On Monday and Tuesday, we flooded Capitol Hill with that message, virtually visiting more than 100 congressional offices by phone and video!

If you haven’t already, remember to submit your lobby report back form to tell us how your visit went!

  • Rachel Cleetus of the Union of Concerned Scientists reminded us of the power of bringing diverse voices to the table and putting pressure on policymakers to respond to the climate crisis. Watch Rachel’s remarks.

  • Jamie DeMarco, a former FCNL young fellow and current coordinator for Citizens Climate Lobby, talked about the roles that exist in every movement for change. Whether you are called to act as a rebel, organizer, advocate, or helper right now, your voice is essential. Watch Jamie’s remarks.

  • Mustafa Santiago Ali from the National Wildlife Federation spoke of the need to work in solidarity and authentic collaboration with front-line communities who are dealing with the impacts of climate change on a day-to-day basis. Watch Mustafa’s remarks.

  • Rep. Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) thanked us for making sure that people on both sides of the aisle come together to deal with our climate crisis. He reminded us that what we are working for is not simply a fee on climate emissions. It’s about reinvesting it in our country and in communities must vulnerable to climate change. Watch Rep. Panetta’s remarks.

  • Connecting with new friends online from all over the country to lobby for change!
