At Spring Lobby Weekend 2020, hundreds of students, recent grads, Quakers, and young adults will gathered online and virtually lobbied Congress on one critical issue—climate change.
Rep. Donald McEachin (VA-04), a staunch advocate for environmental justice, passed away on Nov. 28. He first took office in 2017 and worked tirelessly to ensure that infrastructure projects would not disproportionately harm low-income communities and people of color. In honor of Rep. McEachin’s legacy, lawmakers on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis sent a letter to House Democratic leadership on Nov. 30, urging them to pass the Environmental Justice for All Act before the end of the year.
How is Spirit moving through your yearly meeting? Through FCNL’s virtual “travel” to yearly meetings, we join in meeting for business and meeting for worship, hear leadings and concerns, and share the broader work of the Religious Society of Friends as it manifests through FCNL’s advocacy.
The next two months present the best opportunity for the 117th Congress to take meaningful and historic action on climate policy. The goal is to reach an agreement before lawmakers depart for their August congressional recess. We are lobbying to ensure that tax incentives for renewable energy and environmental justice policies are included in any final reconciliation bill.
On October 27 we watched another horrendous mass shooting take place, as 11 people were slain and several others were injured in a shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. This anti-Semitic act of violence has no place in our communities or country. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors and friends against this hatred.
This bipartisan Freedom of Religion Act would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit denying admission to the United States based on an individual’s religion.
FCNL condemns the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, a provocative move that foments violence in the Middle East and endangers lives in the Middle East and potentially beyond. The Friends Committee on National Legislation urges Congress to denounce this provocation and to refuse to fund Trump’s planned fortress-like embassy in Jerusalem.
Are you nervous, excited, frustrated, or even apathetic about the upcoming Presidential election? A lot is at stake in the upcoming elections, but what role do you feel called to play?

The Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quakers) applauds the bipartisan Dream Act of 2017, introduced today by Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) joined by Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
