Quaker Lobby Welcomes Bipartisan Bill Stopping March to War with Iran
Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) applauded today’s introduction of the “Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019,” which would deny funding to a military attack against Iran without the authorization of Congress.

“Congress must do everything in its power to prevent a catastrophic war with Iran,” said Diane Randall, FCNL’s Executive Secretary. “We commend Senators Tom Udall (NM), Rand Paul (KY), and Dick Durbin (IL) for leading this vital bipartisan effort to reassert Congress’ constitutional obligation to prevent the president from dragging our country into another ruinous war without end.”
“Grassroots activists have been mobilizing to get their senators to support this bill since it was first introduced last year, and momentum is building,” explained Kate Gould, FCNL’s Legislative Director for Middle East Policy. “FCNL’s nation-wide network of Quakers and like-minded citizen advocates will continue to press Congress to send a clear message that the president doesn’t have the authority to single-handedly launch a war with Iran.”
In addition to Senators Udall, Paul, and Durbin, original co-sponsors of the legislation include Senators Dianne Feinstein (CA), Martin Heinrich (NM), Patrick Leahy (VT), Jeff Merkley (OR), Chris Murphy (CT), and Bernie Sanders (VT).
FCNL is the leading faith-based organization lobbying American policymakers to prevent war with Iran and has joined a coalition of 50 other organizations calling on members of Congress to press for rejoining the Iran nuclear accord and other steps to support a diplomatic solution to conflicts between the United States and Iran. As a Quaker organization, FCNL seeks to end war and all threats of war. To learn more, please visit www.fcnl.org.
