Washington DC: The Friends Committee on National Legislation welcomes the historic breakthrough between six powers and Iran, and calls on Congress to support this accord, which guards against another nuclear-armed nation and war in the Middle East.

Kate Gould, FCNL’s lead lobbyist on Middle East policy, made the following statement:

The deal reached in Vienna is a watershed achievement, proving that with determination and political will, diplomacy works.

“The deal reached in Vienna is a watershed achievement, proving that with determination and political will, diplomacy works. Diplomacy has already been successful in freezing Iran’s nuclear progress for the first time in a decade. Today, diplomacy has carved out a future that keeps Iran from the bomb, and keeps the United States from another catastrophic war in the Middle East.

In September, members of Congress will have a choice as to whether to support or reject this landmark accord. A clear majority of the American people and national security and non-proliferation experts are calling on members of Congress to support, not sabotage, this historic accomplishment. FCNL’s lobbyists and nationwide network will be working with other faith communities to urge members of Congress to vote in support of this historic deal.

As more than forty pro-diplomacy organizations have warned, ‘this will be among the most consequential national security votes taken by Congress since the decision to authorize the invasion of Iraq.’ It’s time for lawmakers to vote and speak out in support of peaceful resolution over the Iranian nuclear impasse. War and peace are on the line.”

FCNL has advocated for a peaceful resolution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program for nearly a decade.

FCNL has advocated for a peaceful resolution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program for nearly a decade. In just the last two years of talks on Iran’s nuclear program, FCNL’s nation-wide network has generated tens of thousands of pro-diplomacy messages and phone calls to congressional offices; organized hundreds of lobby visits on Iran in district, state and D.C. congressional offices, including participating in a lobby day with more than 443 constituents from 43 states; and published more than 250 pro-diplomacy letters to the editor in newspapers from every state in the country.
