Hassan El-Tayyab, of the Friends Committee for National Legislation (FCNL), told HuffPost that Trump’s continued pushes against Tehran — like his new blockade on the Strait of Hormuz — and ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon boost the argument for a move beyond war powers resolutions to challenge the U.S.-Israel status quo.
Tuesday was a deeply shameful and frightening day for our country, with President Trump threatening to destroy the “entire civilization” of Iran.
The Trump administration has requested $200 billion in supplemental funding for war against Iran that Congress has neither authorized nor meaningfully debated. Yet Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is indicating that the amount could increase.
We call on the American people and government to end the US destruction of the Iranian people, their homes, schools, health facilities, places of worship and of commerce.
Congress may soon consider a supplemental spending bill of more than $200 billion to fund U.S. military operations against Iran. This legislation would deepen military engagement, increase the risk of a prolonged conflict, and could draw in U.S. ground forces. Lawmakers should reject any supplemental funding for this illegal war.
As the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran escalates, we continue to mourn the lives lost and destroyed each day by this violence.
We unequivocally condemn the attacks on Iran in March 2026 and demand the immediate cessation of all attacks and the withdrawal of the U.S. military from the area. We grieve over the loss of life, the human suffering, the damage to the world economy, and the environmental damage.
As a community of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), we are disturbed and deeply concerned about the recent violence in the Middle East.
