The 2016 election manifested the deep political and
social divisions in our country, revealing stark differences
in voters’ hopes for the future. We see anger,
fear, despair, resignation, sadness, and indifference
across the political spectrum.
A diverse group of organizations applauded today’s overwhelming bipartisan Senate vote to repeal the 1991 and 2002 AUMFs and formally end the Gulf and Iraq wars.
The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) seeks a society with equity and justice for all. How does that translate into our legislative priorities and into the organizational culture of FCNL? How do we live into that vision and become an anti-racist organization?
Growing up, my friends and peers would always choose me as the voice to speak out against societal injustices. As I grew older, these early experiences led me to begin advocating against domestic and sexual violence against women and children.
FCNL joined 26 other faith communities in sending a comment to the Environmental Protection Agency calling for the addition of all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). PFAS are chemicals that accumulate in the human body and have harmful environmental impacts. Strengthening regulatory standards and procedures surrounding these harmful chemicals furthers FCNL’s mission of seeking an earth restored.
On August 9, FCNL and more than 40 other organizations in the Alliance for Peacebuilding sent a letter to House appropriators, urging them to protect funding for foreign assistance. The administration has attempted to freeze $4 billion of these congressionally-approved funds. This would impact the ability of the U.S. to prevent and manage conflict abroad.
On February 27, 2018, FCNL and 24 other organizations sent a letter to the administration calling for the U.S. to fulfill its promise to resettle refugees who are Iranian religious minorities.
In a letter issued on May 29, 60 non-governmental organizations write to urge Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair, Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), to schedule the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act for consideration before the Committee at the next business meeting.
When I was 6 years old, my mother, three siblings, and I fled Iran
during the Iran-Iraq war, seeking refuge in America. We had no way of
knowing then that a president of the United States would one day create a dense web of policies that I think specifically target Iranians and Muslims. We knew only that my fifteen-year-old brother would soon be drafted and sent into battle to die.
