Mark Shanahan is responsible for maintaining and growing FCNL’s sustainable operations and oversees the facilities management of FCNL’s office and 205 C Street. Besides leading the process of continuing updates of our current FCNL building, Mark is also the project manager of the 205 C Street construction project, heavily involved in the development, planning and construction process for the future Quaker Welcome Center and Friend in Washington base on Capitol Hill.

Before joining FCNL at the end of September 2015, Mark served as the Facilities Manager for Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, Iowa for five years. During this time at Scattergood, Mark learned to embrace the Quaker values and process of discernment. Previous to this, Mark has been a historic preservation specialist, stonemason and independent contractor in the Metro DC area since Mark moved to the States in 2001. Mark spent the previous 8 years as a journeyman specialist, working on many varied projects throughout Europe, with his home base in Germany. He worked on the restoration of historic churches and cathedrals, market squares, museums, wineries and castles, to name a few. After the completion of a traditional apprenticeship, Mark was an independent builder working directly with clients and architects.

With these skills and past experiences, Mark hopes to continue the stewardship of FCNL’s headquarters with an eye on the holistic improvements, to keep FCNL’s goal of “an earth restored.” In this vein, Mark is now an accredited LEED Green Associate and an active member of the USGBC and IFMA local chapters.

Mark is an avid sportsman, traveler and adventurer. He is a proud father of six. He loves art, music, hiking, camping, to cook and grill. He is also passionate on studying and practicing Aikido, the art of love and harmony and has been teaching Aikido at Scattergood and the University of Iowa for the past few years.
