Update Congress Leaves Town as Aid for Puerto Rico Runs Out 

Congress left town for a two-week recess. Many legislative items remain undone, but one of the most urgent and tragic is the failure to pass a disaster assistance package. As a result, nearly 1.4 million individuals in Puerto Rico, a third of the island’s population, have seen their nutrition assistance deeply cut since the end of March.

On Feb. 1, the Trump Administration posted a notice for proposed rulemaking through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to restrict states' flexibility to provide vital nutrition support to people who struggle to feed themselves and their families. This triggered a 60-day public comment period which ends on April 2.

The Senate Must Act to Reopen Government, Protect Vulnerable Communities 

On January 15, FCNL sent this letter to Senate staff outlining the impacts of the longest lapse in federal funding in history and urging Congress immediately pass bipartisan, responsible spending bills.

Each year it helps 40 million Americans put food on the table. Background USDA Releases Report on Proposed Rule That Would Implement New Time Limits on SNAP 

On Dec. 20, just a few days after the House and Senate passed with overwhelming bipartisan support the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (H.R. 2), also known as the farm bill, USDA released a proposed rule change that would force 755,000 people to lose their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
