The Letter requested that the National Security Strategy recognize climate change as a threat to the security of the United States. The letter noted that “Secretary of Defense Mattis has stated that ‘the effects of a changing climate… will impact our security situation.’”

Lawmakers also noted the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act, in which [Congress specifically voted] (https://www.fcnl.org/updates/climate-win-in-the-ndaa-937) to include language regarding climate change. The language passed by Congress directs Secretary Mattis to submit a report to Congress on military installations which are vulnerable to climate change.

Langevin and Stefanik’s letter is the most recent in a growing number of bipartisan statements and actions from Congress acknowledging the risks posed by climate change.
