FCNL joined 100 interfaith organizations in a joint statement calling on members of the UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to act in accordance with their moral conscience to recognize the incredible threat these weapons pose, affirm that nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and take swift steps toward disarmament.
On Nov. 18, FCNL joined New York advocates in thanking Sen. Chuck Schumer (NY) for his leadership on preventing war with Iran and urging him to ensure the Khanna-Gaetz amendment to the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) remains in the bill through House-Senate conference negotiations.
Returning from the 10-day Washington Summer Intensive, FCNL’s 20 Advocacy Corps organizers knew they would be faced with the difficult task of advocating for legislation to end gun violence. But they didn’t know that within days the issue would tragically return to the front pages after a terrible round of mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton.
H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, would prevent the Trump administration from using any funds to withdraw from the vital Paris Climate Agreement. It would also require the administration to develop plans to meet our emissions reductions goals in the agreement.
On August 1, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted the Secure and Protect Act of 2019 (S. 1494) out of committee. The bill, introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham (SC), would expand family immigrant family detention, erode the U.S. asylum system, and make it harder for families to seek protection. In a statement, FCNL urged members of Congress to oppose this legislation and work instead to protect vulnerable migrants and uphold U.S. asylum law.
FCNL joined 40 organizations in sending a letter to House leadership applauding their support of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would halt all U.S. military aid for the illegal Saudi-led war in Yemen.
Here in Sonoma County, we know the impacts of climate change all too well. While our community is incredibly resilient, we have been beaten back numerous times by fires and floods. Our fire season is no longer a season — it’s fire year. Recently, a close friend lost her family home while her parents barely escaped the Bennett Valley hills driving through blinding smoke to safety. Too many here could tell similar stories.
