The bipartisan Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission co-chaired by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) held a second hearing in a series on preventing mass atrocities.
The hearing featured expert testimony from witnesses in the peacebuilding community, including several members of the Prevention and Protection Working Group led by FCNL, including Bridget Moix, current Clerk of FCNL’s General Committee.
Asked by Rep. McGovern to name “the single most important thing we can do next year” to prevent mass atrocities, Moix, who serves as the Senior U.S. Representative and Head of Advocacy for Peace Direct, offered a simple response: Support the Global Fragility and Violence Reduction Act.
In her written testimony, Moix identified the bill as a way Congress can increase “recognition and engagement with local peacebuilding.” The legislation would require the development of a long-term, government-wide strategy to reduce and prevent violence.
