Support Khanna/Gaetz Amendment Against War With Iran
House of Representatives
The United States and Iran are moving closer to war every day. In the United States, the Trump administration is playing a dangerous game. While claiming not to want a war with Iran, the administration has rapidly escalated tensions between our two countries, increasing the risk of accidents and miscalculations.
Please support legislation to prevent the president from attacking Iran without congressional authorization. Reps. Ro Khanna (CA-17) and Matt Gaetz (FL-01) have proposed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would ensure the president cannot take military action against Iran without congressional authorization – except in response to an attack on America or its armed forces. This amendment is expected to receive a vote the week of July 8.
As a Quaker organization, we oppose all war. As a matter of public policy, we believe Congress must debate and vote before the president commits our military to lethal action and should regularly evaluate and vote on whether to continue ongoing U.S. wars.
Please cosponsor and vote for the bipartisan Khanna/Gaetz amendment to prevent war with Iran
- The administration’s escalation of threats and war planning is destabilizing and dangerous. Diplomacy and international cooperation are the only paths to lasting security.
- Article I of the Constitution states that only Congress has the power to declare war. Congress has not authorized military action against Iran.
- Article II of the Constitution authorizes the president to use military force to repel sudden attacks against the United States, even without congressional authorization. But even then, the armed forces must be withdrawn after 60 days unless Congress enacts a specific law approving their continued use.
