Republicans Introduce Carbon Pricing Bill
This week, something big happened for our climate. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), along with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-08), introduced H.R. 6463, the MARKET CHOICE Act. This is the first Republican-led effort in almost a decade to seriously address climate change.
The MARKET CHOICE Act is a carbon tax, which places a fee on the burning of fossil fuels to increase the demand for cleaner energy sources. Ultimately, the goal of a price on carbon is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At FCNL, we believe that pricing carbon is one essential mechanism to address climate change.
This bill is expected to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 30-40 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, exceeding the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. You can read more about the MARKET CHOICE Act on FCNL’s website.
This bill is an important milestone in congressional efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change in a bipartisan fashion. We are eager to engage with all legislators as they consider policies to reduce the impact of climate change and protect vulnerable communities.
