Oppose the Creation of a Religious Registry
A religious registry -- or any registry that validates religious discrimination -- runs fundamentally counter to the First Amendment. We need to speak out against religious discrimination in all forms.
Registries like the one proposed have a dark history. Too often, they’re just the beginning of violence and further discrimination. With hate crimes against Muslims and those perceived as Muslims already on the rise, this registry would further entrench Islamophobia in the U.S. We need to stop a religious registry before it takes hold.
Fortunately, we can take productive steps to oppose this proposal. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA) has re-introduced legislation to prohibit the creation or use of a registry based on religious affiliation. This bill reaffirms a basic constitutional right and should be supported by every member in the U.S. House of Representatives.
