On September 26, 2017, FCNL along with 13 other organizations hosted a rally behind the White House to protest the Trump administration’s most recent travel ban and proposed refugee cap of 45,000. Activists, reporters, members of Congress, musicians, and general citizens gathered at 6:00 pm to listen to the speakers and express deep opposition to the administration’s discriminatory and exclusionary measures.
Yasmine Taeb of FCNL opened the evening by stating “We’re here tonight to stand in solidarity with our Muslim, refugee, and immigrant brothers and sisters and to loudly proclaim that we will not stand for a Muslim ban ever.” She was followed by several speakers, including Congressman Jerrold Nadler of New York and Congressman Hank Johnson of Georgia. Both decried the policies from the White House and expressed strong support for more open and inclusive immigration practices.
The supporting organizations included: Amnesty International, Center for American Progress Action Fund, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the U.S. & Canada, Church World Service, Council on American-Islamic Relations, CREDO, Emgage, Franciscan Action Network, HIAS, J Street, Lambda Legal, MoveOn, Muslim Public Affairs Council, National Iranian American Council, National LGBTQ Task Force, Oxfam, Poligon Education Fund, Presbyterian Church USA Office of Public Witness, and Win Without War.
