The Friends Committee on National Legislation applauds the decision by 42 senators to support the accord to limit Iran’s nuclear program. FCNL was proud to co-sponsor a press conference today with NIAC Action, Global Zero, WAND, Council for a Livable World, Win Without War, Peace Action and other peace and security organizations to mark today’s triumph for pro-peace grassroots citizen advocacy.

Kate Gould, FCNL’s lead lobbyist on Middle East policy, made the following statement:

“Today’s milestone is a testament to the indomitable power of a fired-up citizenry pressing their elected representatives to support diplomacy, not war. The multi-million dollar ad campaigns playing fast and loose with the facts are no match for the American people’s determination to keep the U.S. out of yet another war in the Middle East.

Our principal interest is in ensuring that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons and that our countries avoid another war in the Middle East. Precious few Beltway insiders predicted that 41 senators would vote in support of the Iran accord, let alone that 41 senators would commit their support even before the vote has taken place. This is a victory that belongs first and foremost to the tens of thousands of Americans who have called, written or lobbied their members of Congress to keep us from entering yet another war in the Middle East.

In the most consequential war and peace vote in years, the American people have finally been heard in their support for diplomatic solutions and an end to endless U.S. wars. Since the historic call between President Obama and President Rouhani two years ago, FCNL’s staff and network have made more than 400 lobby visits in support of a negotiated settlement over Iran’s nuclear program, and published more than 350 pro-diplomacy op-eds and letters to the editor in newspapers in every state in the country.

FCNL and our nationwide network call on all lawmakers to vote for the agreement on the floor of the House and Senate, and support its implementation. If successfully implemented, the Iran accord will guard against another nuclear-armed nation and war in the Middle East, and make this world a safer place.”

Note: This press release was updated at 6:45 PM on Sept 8th to reflect Senator Maria Cantwell (WA) becoming the 42nd senator to support the Iran Accord.
