This legislative ask is designed to be shared with your members of Congress and their staff.

We urge every member of Congress to take swift action in response to ongoing attacks on voting rights across the nation.

Pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act (H.R.5746)

The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act (H.R.5746) is the bold solution we need. This transformative legislation is a comprehensive package of democracy reforms that will expand and protect voting rights for all, end gerrymandering, and get dark money out of politics. The legislation was brought to a vote before the Senate in January 2022. However, the Senate failed to amend the filibuster rules allowing for final passage, and the measure did not pass.

The need for the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act couldn’t be more urgent. Since the 2020 election, hundreds of bills have been introduced in statehouses across the country aimed at limiting participation in our democracy. These bills intentionally seek to silence the voices of the American people, particularly Black and brown voters, who voted in record numbers in 2020.

The provisions of this legislation are popular among the majority of Americans, no matter their political affiliation. Our democracy is too precious and fragile to wait any longer.

The Senate must pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. This bill would:

  • Institute nationwide early voting
  • Establish same day voter registration
  • Decrease congressional candidates’ dependence on big money donors by creating a small donor public financing matching system
  • Promote transparency by requiring organizations spending money on elections—including super PACs and 501(c)(4) dark money groups—to promptly disclose donors who have given $10,000 or more during an election cycle
