Chestnut
Hill Friends Meeting Minute
100
E. Mermaid Lane Philadelphia, PA 19118 (215)-247-3553
The
members and attenders of the Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting of
the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) strongly oppose any
military attack on the government and people of Iraq. Quakers
seek to answer that of God in everyone, holding everyone's life
as sacred, and striving to remain open to the truth that is
in each of us. We thereby seek to live in ways that promote
harmony and remove the causes of war. This means speaking truth
as we see it, laboring with those with opposing points of view,
and having the patience to work toward the common good.
We
are concerned with the terrible damage that war will do to the
land and the people of Iraq, to our soldiers, and to the soul
of our country. Bombing and invasion will sow the seeds of future
conflicts. The concept of preemptive attack violates international
law, and can only lead to escalation of tension and greater
international insecurity.
We
ask that the United States engage the international community
in a sincere search for long-lasting and peaceful solutions
to the conflict, seeking to address the concerns of all involved.
True multilateralism is not the building of larger alliances
against the foe, but the honest and respectful search for common
ground with those whom we might see as the enemy.
