The U.S. needs a new approach to avoid war that combines active diplomacy, assurances that the U.S. does not intend to permanently occupy Iraq, and the kind of people-to-people interactions that can build links of understanding between our two nations.

Congress should pass legislation requiring a full congressional debate and vote before the president could take military action against Iran. Urge your senators to co-sponsor a bill introduced by Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (S. 759).

FCNL is working to encourage a diplomatic solution to the disputes and is involved in an ongoing dialogue between faith communities in the U.S. and the people and government of Iran.

• On September 26 Executive Secretary Joe Volk joined over 100 religious leaders in an hour-long, interfaith encounter with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York.
• In February, 13 U.S. religious leaders visited Iran, where they met with a variety of governmental, academic, and religious leaders and called on the U.S. and Iranian governments to establish diplomatic negotiations as one part of creating a path to peace.
