Joe's Writings from China
April 28, Shanghai... Our meetings in China finished with a great set of two sessions with the Shanghai Institute for International Studies and the American Studies Center at Fudan University. Our first meeting in China was at the Chinese Society for Human Rights in Beijing. In all, we met with nine institutes, three mayors, and a number of high-level Communist Party of China officials. We visited in Beijing, Yan'an, Xi'an, and Shanghai.
Our experience ranged from engagement with scholars; serious conversations with officials; engagement with ordinary people in markets, hotel lobbies, and on the street; visits to rural villages; and the wonderful sight-seeing, which included visits to ancient sights like the Great Wall, the Wild Goose Pagoda, the Tomb of the Yellow Emperor, the Terra Cotta Army, and contemporary sights like the Beijing Museum and the Yangshan Free Trade Deepwater Port Area.
