Best known as a food source for panda bears, bamboo is also a fast-growing weed that makes a handy, sustainable alternative to increasingly scarce hard wood from forests. Because bamboo grows so quickly, stocks are replenished easily; this decreases the impact on the land from the harvest of building materials. It takes just three years to re-grow a thicket of bamboo, compared to the decades needed to replenish an old growth forest.
Bamboo is also an attractive building material, notable for its natural “shadowed” appearance and pleasing texture.
The bamboo floors are only the most visible eco-friendly building material in our new building. The linoleum in the kitchen and bathrooms is made from all-natural material. The wood trim along the floor and doorways is made from certified sustainably-harvested beech and maple. The acoustic ceiling tiles and carpets have high recycled content.
From the beginning of the building project, FCNL tried to maximize sustainability and minimize waste. As much as possible, we tried to use materials that could be found and trucked in from less than 500 miles away.
