David Goldstein
David Goldstein, co-director of the Natural Resource Defense Council's energy program, will be a featured speaker at FCNL's Annual Meeting this November. David has been instrumental in the development of energy efficiency standards for new buildings and appliances at the regional and national level. "The idea that we must choose between a healthy environment and a healthy economy is a myth," he told FCNL in agreeing to speak at Annual Meeting. "Not only do well-conceived regulations create more jobs, they also contribute to more efficient designs and less expensive projects." In 2002, the MacArthur Foundation awarded David one of its prestigious five-year fellowships ("genius award") in recognition of his work on energy efficiency and policy. He holds a PhD in physics from the University of California at Berkeley.
John Lewis
Atlanta Representative John Lewis, a leader of the U.S. civil rights movement, will speak from his experience as a committed non-violent activist working in the U.S. Congress during one of the longest running wars in U.S. history. Lewis, who made a name for himself first working with Martin Luther King Jr and then later as chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, will celebrate 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives this year. During the debate on authorizing new funding for the war in Iraq this year, John Lewis took the floor at one point to declare "As a Nation, can we hear the words of Gandhi, so simple, so true, that it is either nonviolence or nonexistence? Can we hear the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., saying that we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish as fools?"
FCNL's 2007 Annual Meeting will be held November 8-11 at the Georgetown University Conference Center in Washington, DC. Find out more and register.
