Cluster Bombs: Ask Your Representatives to Support a Ban
Printer-friendly version of this alert
By now in this election year, you've probably heard a lot from the candidates running for the U.S. House in your area. But have you heard whether they support a ban on cluster bombs?
Take Action
Candidates for the U.S. House in your district need to hear now that voters support a cluster bomb ban so that they will feel urgency to ban these indiscriminate weapons after the election. Please urge your House candidates to call for a ban on the use and export of these horrible weapons, which have killed and maimed tens of thousands of civilians.
Momentum Builds for a Ban
- More than half the world's governments met in Dublin, Ireland, in May and agreed to a global ban on cluster bombs.
- Nearly one-quarter of the Senate has endorsed legislation banning these weapons.
Just this month, local advocates working with FCNL made Maine the first state in the nation whose entire congressional delegation has endorsed legislation banning cluster bombs (S. 594/H.R. 1755).
- Despite the increasing worldwide rejection of these weapons, the administration has worked to undermine global negotiations toward a cluster bomb ban, and the Pentagon says that the U.S. military will continue to produce, use, and export cluster munitions for another 10 years.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Pope, UNICEF, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all support a cluster bomb ban.
