Iraq: Don't Give Up on Congress
Printer-friendly version of this alert
Many of you, and many people here at FCNL, will be participating in vigils, demonstrations, and other events marking the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq this week. As you take part in these events, don't give up on Congress.
If Congress doesn't act soon, the president and Congress that take office in 2009 will have to immediately deal with some 100,000 U.S. troops in Iraq. They could also be locked into a long-term military presence in Iraq, and a diplomatic process in a shambles because the United States refuses to talk seriously with all the actors involved in the region.
How can you encourage your members of Congress to act? Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Let your community, and your members of Congress, that Congress should
- insist on a more aggressive U.S. diplomatic strategy that includes face-to-face talks with all of Iraq's neighbors that is essential for any withdrawal of U.S. troops and ;
- prevent the Bush administration from locking in a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq.
