43 Percent
Printer-friendly version of this alert
That’s the percentage of your 2007 federal income taxes that went to the military – to pay for both current and past military activities. Of every dollar you pay in taxes:
1 cent goes to diplomacy and foreign aid;
3 cents goes to the environment, energy, and science;
12 cents goes to respond to poverty in the United States;
43 cents goes to war.
This budget is out of balance. And it's getting more out of balance all the time. In the next two months, Congress is expected to approve even more money for the war and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The House and Senate budget committees have already begun making decisions about spending priorities for 2009. But it’s not too late to influence the process. Contact your senators now and encourage them to push for a change in how the federal government spends your tax dollars in the future.
Take Action
Please let your senators know that spending 43 percent of your tax dollars on war does not reflect your spending priorities for the United States. Urge both of your senators to shift funds from the military to priorities that support real security by promoting conflict resolution and international development, domestic human needs, and responses to climate change.
