Action: Send Valentines to Congress
Have you sent Valentines to your members of Congress?
On Valentine's Day, many people express extra appreciation for the people they're closest to. While you may not feel a personal connection to your members of Congress, the decisions they make on your behalf directly affect your life and the lives of others in your community. Letting members know what you appreciate about their work is part of using the power of love to build a long-term relationship with members of Congress. These relationships help you, and FCNL, work with members to advance the world that we seek to bring about.
This Valentine's Day, send your senators thank you notes in response to actions they've taken recently. If you can't find a reason to write a thank you note, send a message about what you hope to be able to thank your senators for next Valentine's Day.
Here are some actions that your senators might have taken for which you could thank them:
- At FCNL, we're thankful for the 51 senators who voted to bar the U.S. government from using torture. This provision will now go to President Bush as part of the intelligence authorization bill. Find out if your senators voted to bar torture, and send a message responding to their vote.
- We also appreciate the 29 senators who reaffirmed that the government cannot listen in on our private phone calls without the approval of a court of law. Find out if your senators voted to end warrantless wiretapping, and respond to their vote.
- Our heart also goes out to the 32 senators who are insisting again today that their colleagues pass the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (S. 1200). This legislation could dramatically improve health care services for nearly 2 million Native Americans. Find out if your senators have cosponsor of the bill, and send a message responding to the position they've taken.
- Take a look at FCNL's voting record for the first session of the 110th Congress for other votes for which one of your senators could be thanked.
