Action: Take Two Minutes to Celebrate the Season of Peace
By Working to Make It a Reality
Printer-friendly version of this alert
Dear Friend,
Congress is rushing toward the end of its first session without having accomplished as much as many of us had hoped to see this year. We at FCNL are thankful for the small steps your lawmakers have taken this year. But as you know a long list of missed opportunities exists : for instance, the U.S. hasn't left Iraq, torture is not outlawed, and access to health care for Native Americans hasn't been improved.
We at FCNL will continue to lobby until members of Congress leaves town for their winter recess. We'll be pushing for a sensible, new diplomatic strategy with Iraq and Iran, for strong energy legislation, and against any legislation to give the president a blank check for domestic spying. At the same time, we're also planning our lobbying strategies for next year and working to ensure that the issues you and I care about are part of the election year debate around the country.
We need your help to change policy in Washington. Will you work with us to change the debate during the elections? Your efforts have already helped make War is Not the Answer a part of the public debate - two columnists in the New York Times have referenced our signs in the past week, and FCNL now has a network of sign distributors in every state and in 245 congressional districts. As part of your celebration of peace on earth, we hope you'll put up a War is Not the Answer sign, then question candidates about how they'll work to make that message a reality.
In just two minutes, you can order a War is Not the Answer window sign and be a part of the movement to make peace an election year issue. The more times that candidates for Congress see the War is Not the Answer message, the more likely they are to register that peace is an issue that voters care about. See where the message is already spreading across the country and find out how to put yourself on the map.
Have a little more time? Check out FCNL's resources for raising peace and justice issues in the 2008 election. These resources include sample questions for candidates (PDF) ; presidential candidates' positions (PDF) ; and tips for making "War is Not the Answer" an election issue.
