Action: Iraq - Four Years of Failed Policy is Enough
Today Congress begins a week of deliberations on whether to fund the president’s escalation of the war or insist on a new U.S. policy in Iraq. The House vote is scheduled for Friday, March 23.. A Senate vote is scheduled for the week of March 26.
Congress will be voting on the president's request for an additional $100 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in fiscal year 2007. These new funds would be in addition to the $524 billion Congress has already approved for these wars since they began.
We at FCNL oppose any funding for war and have urged members of both the House and the Senate to oppose the president’s request. At the same time, FCNL lobbyists have concluded that an overwhelming majority of members of Congress will ultimately vote to approve more money for war.
In our efforts to seek a world without war, we at FCNL often face a gap between the actions members of Congress should take and the steps members of Congress are ready to take. If members of Congress are unwilling to oppose new war funding, we at FCNL urge them not to approve one more dollar for the war without also insisting on new U.S. diplomacy and a date for U.S. troop withdrawal. We will be disappointed with members who vote for funding the war, but we will be outraged if they give the president another blank check for war.
Take Action
Please contact your senators. Urge them to vote against any new funding for Iraq war. Tell them that if the Senate is going to approve the Iraq war supplemental funding bill, any new war funding must be made contingent on a change in U.S. policy in Iraq – diplomacy and date certain for withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Background
Iraq War Policy: We expect multiple votes in the House and Senate on the Iraq war supplemental funding legislation. Check back for updates.
Budget Votes: FCNL lobbyists also anticipate Congress will be making broad decisions on federal budget policy. Their budget resolution will decide how much new money is allocated to war, how much money is allocated to the peaceful prevention of deadly conflict, and how much money is allocated to addressing other critical human needs here and abroad. You can follow these votes on our website.
