Action: From Iran, Joe Volk Urges No Rush to War
Printer-friendly version of this alert
FCNL’s Executive Secretary Joe Volk is currently in Iran as part of a 13-person religious delegation reaching out to encourage a dialogue between our two nations in the hope of averting a war. The view from Iran, Joe reports, is that the international process led by the United Nations is producing results: The Iranians are willing to begin negotiations to return their nuclear program to full international safeguards.
Joe’s report tracks very closely with what Mohammed El Baradei, the respected head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, is saying. El Baradei sees hope for progress if both sides will come to the negotiations table. He has proposed a time out, or simultaneous suspension of Iranian uranium enrichment and UN sanctions, that could open up space for diplomatic negotiations.
But the Bush administration still stubbornly refuses to enter into any direct negotiations with Iran and continues to threaten sanctions, military action, and regime change. The United Nations, the European governments, and the Israeli government all argue that there is time to talk.
Congress needs to act to insist that the U.S. not rush into another war. Rep. Walter Jones (NC) has introduced legislation (H.J. Res. 14) that would require a public debate and congressional approval before the U.S. launches military action against Iran.
Take Action
Urge your representative to cosponsor the bipartisan legislation introduced by Rep. Walter Jones (NC) that would require the president to seek congressional approval before launching military action against Iran. Please urge your representative to also speak out publicly in favor of similar language being attached to the emergency supplemental spending request that Congress will be considering in March.
