Iraq: Letters to the Editor on Timetable for Withdrawal
Printer-friendly version of this alert
The bipartisan Iraq Study Group’s recommendations for a radical change in U.S. policy provide Congress and the president with a strong foundation from which to begin formulating a new policy that could help end the war in Iraq. The commission’s report calls for three of the four elements FCNL has identified as key to ending the violence in Iraq, but leaves out the cornerstone of FCNL’s recommendations: a firm timetable for the withdrawal of all U.S. military troops and bases from Iraq.
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper mentioning their press coverage of the report and encouraging your members of Congress and the president to launch a new diplomatic initiative that incorporates the core elements of the Iraq Study Group proposals and a firm timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
In your letter, focus on the elements of the report that stress the need for a political strategy to end the violence. The report emphasizes that the next step forward in Iraq must include an internal process that brings armed Iraqi nationalists to the negotiating table and a regional dialogue that includes all neighboring countries -- including Syria and Iran. But the U.S. can do little to advance these goals without also setting a firm deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. military troops. Read FCNL’s analysis of the report.
The study group calls on the U.S. to launch a new diplomatic initiative before the end of this month focused on the conflict in Iraq and declares the U.S. must commit to revitalizing the Arab-Israeli peace process. Your letter to the editor could call on members of Congress to publicly support the conclusions in the report and insist that the president take action to begin implementing its recommendations before the end of this year.
Take Action
Write a letter to the editor that thanks your local newspaper for covering the Iraq Study Group report and urges Congress and the administration to act. State specifically in your letter that Congress should speak out publicly in support of the report and call on the president to launch a new diplomatic initiative that incorporates the core elements of the Iraq Study Group proposals and includes a firm timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
You can use FCNL’s website to find a sample letter and send your message to your local newspaper.
Background
Do you have a newly elected member of Congress? FCNL’s online advocacy tools do not yet incorporate the addresses of people elected to Congress in November 2006, but we posted those addresses of new representatives and senators on our website.
