One Month Until Elections - Question Candidates Today
Before you step into the voting booth this November, step into a healthy dialogue with your prospective representatives in Washington. Members of Congress will spend most of the next month back home campaigning for the November 7 elections and listening to the concerns of constituents like you.
Political candidates “listen louder” during a campaign than at any other time. The mid-term congressional elections this fall provide a good opportunity to question the war in Iraq, express outrage at the U.S. government’s use of torture, and tell members of Congress and candidates that you oppose the president’s sweeping domestic spying program.
Around the country, campaign signs dot the landscape and candidates are scheduling forums, public events, and small house meetings to talk about their positions on the issues. Use this opportunity to make your opinions and perspectives heard. FCNL’s website has resources to help you frame effective questions to ask candidates about their positions on U.S. policy in Iraq, torture, spying, and the many issues that are important to you and your community.
Take Action
Help build a constructive dialogue with current and future members of Congress. Here are some actions that all of us can take:
1. Ensure that candidates in your state see War Is Not the Answer signs on front lawns in your neighborhood. Order War is Not the Answer yard signs and bumper stickers for yourself and to offer to your neighbors. Take pictures of signs or bumper stickers in your neighborhood and email them to field@fcnl.org or mail to FCNL at the address below. We will post a selection of the photos on our website.
2. This month, make time to go to at least one event where you can meet candidates and their supporters face to face – a town hall meeting, a shopping mall meet-and-greet, or an in-home visit with a few potential supporters. Ask questions that reach past the rhetoric to discern candidates’ perspectives, and most importantly how they plan to represent you and your perspective in Washington.
