Spying: Your Senator Key to Stopping Warrantless Wiretapping
The President is asking Congress to pass legislation this week authorizing a massive domestic spying program. The program would let the government spy on telephone and email communications of people in the U.S. who are not suspected of any crime. This legislation is part of a series of new proposals that would dramatically expand presidential power; these proposals also include legislation to legalize torture and secret prisons. We at FCNL believe that these proposals, as they are currently written, will not make anyone safer but will erode civil liberties. Read the principles we are urging senators to follow.
Your senators will be pressed to vote on the president’s proposals before Congress heads home at the end of this week to campaign. Though Congress has been debating these issues for months, new versions of these important bills have been cobbled together behind closed doors in the last few days. They may come up individually in the Senate, or they may be combined into one bill. This legislation has generated substantial opposition from military leaders, retired diplomats, and civil liberties advocates. Please urge your senators to block approval of this dangerous legislation.
Take Action
Because Congress will adjourn at the end of this week, we urge you to call your senators today. Urge them to do everything they can to block passage of the legislation concerning the National Security Agency (NSA) and the military tribunal (or commissions) this week.
You can use FCNL’s website to find talking points for the call and direct phone numbers to your senators' offices. You can also call your senators through the Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121.
