Kate Gould
Legislative Program Assistant, Foreign Policy
Kate joined FCNL this fall as the Program Assistant for Foreign Policy and the newest member of FCNL’s Iraq Peace Team. Kate studied International Development and Political Science at Western Washington University in Washington State. Through the course of her education she has studied the influence of U.S. defense and humanitarian intervention in the developing world while living in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Zanzibar/Tanzania. Her education also included involvement in the anti-war movement on campus and interning at a temporary residence for refugees. She carried out her senior project in Zanzibar where she interviewed women in a rural island community about HIV/AIDS awareness, and its relation to women’s empowerment. She used this information to write a report requested by the development agency CARE, which made recommendations for its upcoming HIV/AIDS education program in Zanzibar.
She is thrilled to be an FCNL intern, where she can begin her career in advocating for a shift in US foreign policy towards greater diplomatic engagement. She plans to go to graduate school to focus on US foreign policy in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
Kate is greatly inspired by Quaker principles which she learned from her many years as a camper and counselor in the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Camping Program. Away from the office, Kate loves wilderness adventures, practicing her Swahili, and exploring the vast networks of cultural diversity in Washington D.C.
