For the first time in almost 10 years, the United States has a chance to stop the development and spread of new nuclear weapons. During his campaign, Barack Obama said that as president he would "set a new direction in U.S. nuclear weapons policy" and "work to ultimately eliminate all nuclear weapons."
Urge President-Elect Obama to act on this promise by securing Senate ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty:http://capwiz.com/fconl/issues/alert/?alertid=12318051 . This treaty prohibits all nuclear test explosions and is essential to any effort to prevent the development of new generations of nuclear weapons. The United States is one of nine countries that must ratify the treaty before it can enter into force.
President Bill Clinton signed the treaty, but the Senate voted it down. Obama will have to expend significant political capital to gain Senate ratification, which requires the support of two-thirds of the Senate (67 senators).

Urge him to designate a respected senior advisor to lead the ratification effort. This person can work full-time to convince senators to put the treaty on their agenda and vote for ratification.
